Congenital Cardiac Surgery Subspecialty Certification

The American Board of Thoracic Surgery has offered a subspecialty certificate in Congenital Cardiac Surgery since 2009. Subspecialty Certification in Congenital Cardiac Surgery can be achieved by two pathways:  Pathway I is successfully completing an ACGME-approved congenital cardiac surgery residency (fellowship) and fulfillment of other requirements that are listed in the Congenital Cardiac Surgery Booklet of Information, which can be found on this web site.  Pathway II is available to practicing congenital cardiac surgeons who completed thoracic surgery residency and congenital training prior to July 1, 2008.

Pathway I - Pathway I is via the successful completion of a full congenital cardiac surgery residency approved by the ACGME, starting on July 1, 2008 or thereafter.  A pre-requisite is successful completion of an ACGME-approved thoracic surgery residency program.

Candidates beginning congenital cardiac surgery training July 1, 2013 and thereafter must apply and become approved for the congenital cardiac surgery certification process WITHIN ONE (1) YEAR after the satisfactory completion of their congenital cardiac surgery residency.
